Between the two channels sits a small group of switches that defines how the 554 behaves: how the signal leaves, whether the equalization is active, and whether you work in stereo or Mid/Side. Each channel has its own three-position selector. As with hand-wound guitar pickups, the winding pattern and wire tension are not merely manufacturing details: they influence the electrical behaviour of the coil. We chose a high-quality potentiometer rather than a stepped frequency switch. Although a switch can make stereo matching and settings recall more precise, continuous adjustment allows finer, more individual and artistic tonal decisions, including frequencies between fixed switch positions. The control is rated for 100,000 cycles without compromising reliability.
